Description
This 1893 white metal token, 29mm in diameter with a hole, cataloged as TC-54083, was issued by Wm. Deering & Co. of Illinois. William Deering & Company was one of the most important agricultural machinery manufacturers in American history, producing reapers, mowers, and harvesters at their Chicago factory. Deering merged with several competitors in 1902 to form International Harvester, one of the largest industrial corporations in the world. The holed token was worn as a watch fob or pendant, serving as a wearable advertisement for the company. The 1893 date coincides with the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where agricultural machinery manufacturers displayed their latest products to an international audience. Deering tokens document one of the pioneering firms that mechanized American agriculture and transformed the nation from subsistence farming to industrial food production.
