Description

This white metal campaign token for the Harrison-Reid ticket from the 1892 election is cataloged as DeWitt BH-1892-5, the white metal variant of the silver piece (PCGS #659427). White metal provided an affordable alternative to the silver version while maintaining a similar silvery appearance. The 1892 election was a rematch between Harrison and Cleveland β€” the only such rematch in American history β€” and produced campaign material referencing both the current campaign and the 1888 contest. Harrison had won the presidency in 1888 despite losing the popular vote to Cleveland, making the 1892 rematch a test of whether that outcome could be sustained. It could not β€” Cleveland won both the popular and electoral vote decisively, becoming the only president to serve non-consecutive terms. This white metal Harrison-Reid token documents the losing side of this historic rematch.
