Description
The 1890 medal GW-1026 in bronze commemorates the Evacuation of Valley Forge β Washington's departure from the famous winter encampment in June 1778 after the Continental Army had been transformed by Baron von Steuben's training program. The evacuation marked the beginning of a new offensive phase of the Revolution. Bronze composition indicates standard commemorative production. The Valley Forge theme was one of the most emotionally powerful in Revolutionary War commemoration, symbolizing endurance, sacrifice, and ultimate triumph. The 1890 date places this medal in the period between the major centennial celebrations of the 1870s-1880s and the approaching bicentennial of Washington's birth in 1932. The artistic quality of the finest Washington medals demonstrates that American medallic art could rival the best European work, particularly in pieces created by skilled engravers at the U.S. Mint and leading private firms.
