1889-P VAM-23A Slanted Date, Strong Clashed Obverse In & st Discovered by John Daino & Jeff Oxman, October 1997. Revised January 2021 PacificWR. This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM. '''23A III2 21 · C3a (Slanted Date, Strong Clashed Obverse In & st) (190)''' '''Obverse III2 21 –''' Very heavily clashed die with bold incuse n and partial incuse I of In from reverse showing next to Liberty head neck and partial incuse st of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. Deepest clashed In known of Morgan Dollar series and first obverse die reported with clashed letters, clashed E's on reverse below tail feathers had been reported earlier. Fine raised dots in fields and die wear groves at stars. Likely obverse die did not receive die hardening procedure resulting in unhardened obverse die that wore very quickly, a rare occurrence for Morgan Dollar series. . ''Die marker -'' Diagonal die polishing lines in ER of LIBERTY. '''Reverse C3a -''' No die clash marks on reverse die very unusual, especially for such strong die clash marks on obverse. ''Die marker -'' Fine die polishing lines at wing-neck gap, same as VAM 5G. '''Comments: # Only 7 have been reported - Jeff Oxman's discovery piece (although Jeff is not listed as the finder), a cleaned AU/XF coin in a net graded ANACS holder, a raw coin found by C. Logan McKechnie in 2005 and was then graded AU58 PL by ANACS and later crossed to a PCGS AU58 [The coin is in the 'California' collection] and an NGC AU58 (now PCGS AU58) found in an old coin album by Dwight Brown (July, 2007). The fifth was reported on VAMWorld by remmy (July, 2013). It appears to be AU-55. The sixth found raw (June, 2014) now in PCGS 63.
