Description

The 1889 medal GW-1131 in bronze features the second obverse die of the "Taking the Oath" design. The bronze composition and second obverse die designation distinguish this from the white metal version with the same design (PCGS #657885). The "Taking the Oath" scene was one of the most popular subjects for inauguration centennial medals. Bronze provides a more durable and higher-quality rendering of the oath-taking scene than white metal, with better detail preservation and more attractive long-term patina development. Washington's image was used on medals and tokens throughout the nineteenth century by organizations, businesses, and individuals seeking to associate their activities with the prestige and patriotic symbolism of the nation's founding father. The second obverse die may show subtle differences from the first die in portrait details or inscription placement. GW-1131 in bronze represents the premium version of a popular 1889 centennial design.
