Description
The 1887 medal GW-1011 in white metal with hole is the holed version of the second Constitution Centennial design. Like its GW-1009 counterpart, this was produced as a wearable badge for centennial celebrations. White metal holed versions of both GW-1009 and GW-1011 were available at the celebrations, giving attendees a choice of designs for their commemorative badges. The survival of multiple Constitution Centennial medal types documents the breadth of the 1887 commemorative effort. The artistic quality of the finest Washington medals demonstrates that American medallic art could rival the best European work, particularly in pieces created by skilled engravers at the U.S. Mint and leading private firms. Educational programs at numismatic conventions frequently feature Washington medals as teaching tools, using their historical context and artistic variety to introduce new collectors to the broader field of American medals.
