Top curve of bar has smaller radius than bottom matching the bottom inside of the 8. On this variety, the M received a gouge and the coins struck with this die have a raised line through the M. Previously this variety was known as [[1886-P VAM-1B. It was changed when the gouge was determined to be a MPD (misplaced digit) (the bottom of an "8") and therefore from its own distinct die rather than being a later stage of VAM-1.
