Coin Details
Description
This 1886 white metal medal at 38mm commemorates the bicentennial of Albany, New York, one of the oldest continuously occupied European settlements in the United States. Founded as the Dutch trading post of Beverwyck in 1614 and chartered as Albany in 1686, the city served as the capital of New York State and a critical junction for transportation, commerce, and politics throughout American history. The 1686-1886 bicentennial celebrated two hundred years of chartered city government. White metal medals were produced for broad public distribution during the celebrations. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists. Albany's bicentennial medals document the historical consciousness of one of America's most historically significant cities.
