Description
The 1883 medal GW-1013 in white metal with hole is the holed white metal version of the GW-1013 Evacuation design, produced as a wearable badge for centennial parade participants. Like the holed GW-1012, this piece was designed to be suspended from a ribbon and worn during the celebrations. White metal holed medals from the 1883 Evacuation centennial are common survivors from the event, as they were mass-produced and distributed widely. However, the soft alloy and the stress of suspension mean many examples show significant wear. The holed format documents the participatory nature of nineteenth-century patriotic celebrations, where attendees displayed their commemorative medals as badges of civic engagement. The Washington medal series documents not only the life and legacy of the first president but also the evolution of American medallic art, commemorative practices, and patriotic expression across more than two centuries.
Rarity Notes
White metal, holed. Evacuation centennial badge. Mass-produced but fragile.
