Description
This silver medal, cataloged as J-RF-4, was produced in 1883 for the Society of the Cincinnati, the oldest hereditary military society in the United States, founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental Army at the close of the Revolutionary War. The "AR" designation confirms the silver composition. Named for the Roman farmer-general Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus who returned to civilian life after saving Rome, the Society embodies the ideal of the citizen-soldier that was central to the American republican experiment. George Washington served as the Society's first president, and membership has been passed through direct male descent from original officer members for nearly 250 years. The J-RF-4 Julian designation places this within the relief fund or organizational medal series. The Society continues today, maintaining Anderson House in Washington, D.C., as a museum and research library dedicated to the American Revolution. Silver medals for the Society were produced in very limited quantities for members and distinguished guests.
