Description
The 1883 medal GW-1002 in copper commemorates the Evacuation of New York — the departure of British forces from New York City on November 25, 1783, marking the end of the British military occupation that had lasted since September 1776. Washington rode triumphantly into the city at the head of the Continental Army, and Evacuation Day was celebrated as a major holiday in New York for decades afterward. The copper composition and the GW-1002 designation place this among the medals produced for the centennial of this significant event. The 1883 Evacuation Day celebrations in New York were elaborate affairs involving parades, ceremonies, and fireworks. Evacuation Day medals form a recognizable subcategory of Washingtoniana, documenting one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the Revolutionary War's conclusion.
