Description
This bronze medal, cataloged as J-CM-27, was produced in 1883 and relates to the Maris family, Dr. Edward Maris, the prominent Philadelphia numismatist who authored the definitive reference work on New Jersey colonial coppers. The "AE" designation confirms the bronze composition. Edward Maris (1832-1900) was one of the most respected numismatic scholars of the late nineteenth century, whose systematic classification of New Jersey colonial coins established attribution standards still used by collectors and dealers today. A medal honoring the Maris family would have been a fitting tribute from the numismatic community to a figure who made permanent contributions to the study of American colonial coinage. The J-CM-27 Julian catalog number places this within the commemorative medal series. The 1883 date falls during the golden age of American numismatic scholarship, when dedicated collectors and researchers were creating the reference works that serve the hobby to this day.
