Description
This 1882 brass token, cataloged as Pa-Ph 393, commemorates Penn and the U.S. Mint Employees — celebrating the bicentennial of William Penn's founding of Pennsylvania in 1682. The U.S. Mint Employees association connected this token to the Philadelphia Mint, which had been operating in Penn's city since 1792. Tokens produced by or for Mint employees are of particular interest to numismatic collectors because of their direct connection to the institution that produces America's coins and medals. The Pa-Ph catalog prefix identifies this within the Philadelphia token reference. The 1882 bicentennial of Pennsylvania's founding generated various commemorative activities in Philadelphia, and this token documents the participation of the Mint workforce in those celebrations. Mint employee associations produced tokens and medals for internal distribution and as collector pieces throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
