Description
This 1882 Pennsylvania Bicentennial medal in silver, cataloged as J-CM-42, is the precious metal version of the commemorative produced for the 200th anniversary of William Penn's founding. Silver was the premium composition in the CM-42 series, produced in very limited quantities for dignitaries, celebration organizers, and collectors paying for precious metal. The J-CM-42 designation in the Julian catalog covers the primary die variety across all compositions. Pennsylvania's role as the cradle of American democracy — home to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the site where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and signed — made its bicentennial a celebration of national as well as state significance. Silver bicentennial medals were distributed in much smaller numbers than bronze versions, and survivors in high grade are particularly desirable to specialists in the Julian medal series.
