=1882-S VAM-45 Doubled Date, Pitted Eye, Engraved Leaves= Renumbered from VAM 16A, February 2025. 45 III2 15 · C3o (Doubled Date, Pitted Eye, Engraved Leaves) (186) Obverse III2 15 – Doubled date as VAM 16 with strong lump at lower right of 2. Later stage with acid treated areas at several points including in front of the eye, inside the ear and around the designer's initial. There is subtle but extensive treatment thru much of the lower hair. Same acid treated obverse as VAM 44, but a later stage. Reverse C3p – Mintmark set low with upper serif under right half of the bow knot. Die markers- diagonal scratch thru lower left wing feathers and line pattern in and around wreath bow. Line pattern in wing-neck gap and around eagle's lower right (viewer's left) leg. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: #Acid treated obverse around designer's initial much stronger than VAM 34. #At least two reverse dies are paired with this obverse. One has the engraved leaves as plated by Van Allen, and the other (VAM-44) has the gouges at the leg, also used for VAM 14 #Former VAM 16A.
