(1882) Medal Pennsylvania Bicentennial Brass 1" Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This brass restrike medal at one inch diameter commemorates the bicentennial of Pennsylvania, originally celebrated in 1882 to mark the 200th anniversary of William Penn's founding of the colony in 1682. Penn received his charter from King Charles II in payment of a debt owed to Penn's father, Admiral Sir William Penn, and established the colony on principles of religious tolerance and democratic governance that would influence the founding of the American republic a century later. The small one-inch format and brass composition suggest this was produced as a pocket piece or charm. The designation as a restrike indicates this was struck from original or reproduction dies at a later date than the original 1882 issue, a common practice for popular commemorative medals. Pennsylvania bicentennial medals document the celebration of one of the original thirteen colonies' founding, connecting colonial history to the broader American narrative.
Rarity Notes
Common. Small brass restrikes were produced in quantity. Original 1882 issues may be scarcer.
