Description
=1880-P VAM-50 Doubled 1-80 and Lower Reverse= Discovered by John Baumgart,August 2006. Revised Aug 2011 by Scott Hamilton. 50(revised) III2 49 · C3c (Doubled 80 and Lower Reverse) (181) Obverse III2 49 – 1-80 in date doubled. Slightly doubled 1 at top left of lower crossbar, right 8 on lower left outside of upper loop and 0 at top left and right outside and slightly on lower left inside. ''Die marker'' - Tiny raised dots on cheek in front of lower hair curl and to right of lower cotton leaf. Reverse C3c – Has same hub doubling as 1878 C3c reverse with doubling of outside edges of some leaves in left wreath and lower right wreath, bottom of right bow ribbon and tops of serifs of A to star in AMERICA. ''Die marker'' - Some fine vertical polishing lines in middle of eagle's right wing. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The 1880-P VAM-50 is among the 1880 Morgans that are represented in the DMPL population and, as such, are among the best struck of the type. # The die chip on the cap, below the ribbon, on the left side. (See photo below) has been found on the earliest die stage of 1880-P VAM-50, a DMPL. On 5 Aug 2011 Leroy corrected the 2007 supplement plates for 1880-P VAM-24. The die markers for 1880-P VAM-24 were actually 1880-P VAM-50/50A.
