Description

This silver restrike of the Quebec Preserved medal (Betts-68) was produced at the Paris Mint during the 1880-98 restrike period. Betts-68 is one of the earliest numbered variants in the Quebec Preserved series, commemorating Frontenac's defense of Quebec against the English under Sir William Phips in 1690. The silver composition makes this considerably scarcer than bronze versions from any restrike period. The Quebec Preserved medals were among the most important issues in Louis XIV's colonial medal program, celebrating a victory that preserved French North America for another seven decades. The Betts series documents the full arc of European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere, from the earliest Spanish exploration medals through the diplomatic pieces marking American independence. The historical significance of the event — the first major Anglo-French military confrontation in North America — ensures continuing collector interest.
