=1879-S VAM-38 Doubled 879= Discovered by Martin Field, January 1981. 38 III2 18 ∙ C3a (Doubled 879) (185) Obverse III2 18 – Doubled 879 in date. 8 doubled at top right outside and lower left outside of upper loop. 7 doubled at top of crossbar and lower right of vertical shaft. 9 doubled at left outside of both loops. Reverse C3a – Normal die of C3 type with medium IV S mint mark centered and upright. Only 1879-S VAM-85 and 1879-S VAM-18B have the die chip on the reverse leaf as well as 1880-S VAM-124. # Specimens are known with and without the die chip at 8.
