Description

1878-P VAM-45 Double Talons Discovered by Bill Fivaz, June 1974. Revised 2010. This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM. '''45(revised) II B/An (Doubled Talons) 179 ''' '''Obverse II2 -''' ''Die marker'' - Diagonal die scratch down from right cotton boll. Also VAM-32. Earlier die state than VAM-32. '''Reverse B/An-'''Left leg is doubled with one and one-half normal width. Middle talon is doubled on left foot and outside talon is doubled on right foot. Olive branch is doubled above tail feathers. Die has been overpolished in eagle's wing and tail feathers. Diagonal polishing marks are in tail feathers. '''DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments: # While this VAM is known for the doubled eagle talons on the reverse, the attribution feature many collectors use to confirm the variety is the large die gouge through the tailfeathers. Other 7/8 coins are gouged in a similar location: [[1878-P VAM-32 has a single line. This one has a pair of gouge lines. VAM-34 has three lines. VAM-45 one of the tougher 7/8 coins to find. # To confirm the attribution of a VAM-45, check the B in the obverse LIBERTY for another gouge.
