Description

Kelly's issued this white metal souvenir token (Pa-Ph 975B) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A Philadelphia restaurant or provisions establishment near the Exposition grounds that issued six token varieties. Pa-Ph 970-975 places these in the later merchant series. Six-variety series suggests thriving business from enormous foot traffic. The white metal composition made this the most economical version of this merchant's Centennial token. White metal tokens survive in the largest numbers because they were produced and distributed in enormous quantities. Lingg & Bro. operated the largest Centennial token production facility in Philadelphia, serving merchants across the city. The Fairmount Park grounds encompassed 285 acres of exhibition space where visitors could encounter the latest in industrial technology, fine arts, and manufactured goods from dozens of nations.
