Description

This white metal Centennial token (Pa-Ph 840) was issued by Burr & Witsil, a dry goods and hardware merchants of Philadelphia. Philadelphia merchants who commissioned eight die varieties across multiple metals. Eight distinct varieties rivaled much larger firms suggesting a successful concession operation. White metal issues were most widely distributed as inexpensive keepsakes for ten million visitors. The tin-lead white metal composition was selected for its economy of production, enabling merchants to afford the large quantities necessary for effective distribution at the crowded Exposition. The Lingg family firm supplied custom dies to Philadelphia merchants seeking affordable, portable advertising during the Centennial year. The Centennial transformed Philadelphia's retail landscape in 1876, bringing foot traffic and revenue to merchants who had never experienced anything approaching the volume of business the Exposition generated.
