Description
This white metal Centennial token (Pa-Ph 774) was issued by Jas. Thornton, a general merchant of Philadelphia. James Thornton, a Philadelphia merchant with four distinct die varieties spanning Pa-Ph 774-778. Jas. abbreviation standard 19th-century convention. The white metal composition (a tin-lead alloy) made this token economical to produce in the large quantities needed for distribution to the massive Centennial crowds. Philadelphia die sinkers Lingg & Bro. produced the vast majority of merchant advertising tokens for the 1876 Centennial, serving clients from diverse commercial trades. America's first official World's Fair opened in Philadelphia on May 10, 1876, marking the hundredth anniversary of national independence with a showcase of industrial and cultural progress. Philadelphia merchants capitalized on the Centennial crowds by commissioning advertising tokens, recognizing that the influx of out-of-town visitors represented a once-in-a-generation marketing opportunity.
