Description
John Stilz & Son issued this white metal souvenir token (Pa-Ph 760) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A high-end men's clothing store at the southeast corner of 7th Street and Market Street, a prime Philadelphia retail location. The token obverse reads 'FINEST CLOTHING HOUSE S.E. COR. 7 AND MARKET PHILADA' — a premium advertising claim. Pa-Ph 760 features the Libertas Americana obverse, one of the most popular Centennial token designs crafted by John Adams Bolen. White metal offered the lowest production cost per piece, making it the default choice for merchants who prioritized wide distribution over the visual appeal of costlier metals. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the primary source for custom merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial celebrations. Token varieties ranged from inexpensive white metal pieces distributed freely to visitors, through mid-range copper and brass issues, to rare silver presentation pieces for collectors.
