Description

Struck in white metal for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 733) was commissioned by Sausser, Dangler & Co., merchants of Philadelphia. The expanded partnership form of Dangler & Co., cataloged separately. Links to broader Dangler & Co. series (Pa-Ph 730-733). Within the hierarchy of Centennial tokens, white metal occupied the entry level — affordable enough for merchants to distribute freely while still offering collectors a tangible souvenir. Produced by Lingg & Bro., whose Philadelphia workshop turned out Centennial merchant tokens at an industrious pace throughout 1876. Centennial token collectors use the Rulau catalog numbering system, which identifies each token by geographic origin and assigns separate entries for different metal compositions of the same die pair. The Centennial drew nearly ten million visitors to Philadelphia between May and November 1876, a figure that transformed the city's economy and created a booming market for portable souvenirs.

Rarity Notes

Cataloged as Pa-Ph 733, this white metal variety has moderate availability among Centennial token collectors. Well-struck examples with full details are preferred by specialists.
