Description

This white metal Centennial token (Pa-Ph 730) was issued by Sausser, Dangler & Co., a merchants of Philadelphia. The expanded partnership form of Dangler & Co., cataloged separately. Links to broader Dangler & Co. series (Pa-Ph 730-733). Produced in white metal, reflecting the composition that accounts for the majority of surviving Centennial merchant tokens. The low production cost of white metal meant merchants could hand out tokens without concern for unit economics, treating them as disposable advertising. Dies were cut at the Lingg brothers' Philadelphia workshop, where the firm had developed efficient production methods for the high volume of merchant token orders. Lingg & Bro. offered merchants a complete token service — from die design through striking — and could produce orders in any of several metal compositions to suit different advertising budgets. The Rulau catalog assigns each Centennial token a geographic prefix and number — Pa-Ph for Philadelphia issues, NY-NY for New York — with separate entries for each metal variant of a given die.
