Description

Struck in white metal for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 319) was commissioned by Penn Mutual Life Ins. Company, life insurance company of Philadelphia. The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1847, was one of Philadelphia's most prominent financial institutions and remains operating in the 21st century. Brass tokens (Pa-Ph 316H) represent premium corporate distribution. Insurance companies were prominent Centennial participants. White metal offered the lowest production cost per piece, making it the default choice for merchants who prioritized wide distribution over the visual appeal of costlier metals. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the leading token manufacturer serving merchants during the Centennial year. Centennial merchant tokens function as miniature time capsules, recording the names, products, and advertising claims of Philadelphia businesses that left few other traces in the historical record.
