Description

This white metal Centennial token (Pa-Ph 318F) was issued by Penn Mutual Life Ins. Company, a life insurance company of Philadelphia. The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1847, was one of Philadelphia's most prominent financial institutions and remains operating in the 21st century. Founded 1847 nearly thirty years old at the Centennial. Brass tokens (Pa-Ph 316H) represent premium corporate distribution. Struck in the tin-lead alloy that constitutes the largest share of surviving Centennial merchant tokens. The minimal cost per white metal token enabled a distribution model closer to modern business cards than to commemorative medals. The Lingg firm's North 8th Street workshop handled orders from dozens of Philadelphia merchants, cutting individual obverse dies while reusing standard reverse designs. As both advertising and souvenir, these tokens gave merchants a marketing vehicle that visitors were motivated to keep rather than discard, ensuring the promotional message endured.
