Description

Struck in white metal, this token (Pa-Ph 258F) was issued by Lingg & Bro. to advertise their own die sinking and token manufacturing services during the 1876 Centennial. Charles Lingg and his brother operated from 36 North 8th Street in Philadelphia, where they cut dies for dozens of merchant advertising tokens distributed at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park. This piece is one of their own advertising series (Pa-Ph 220-245), distinct from the merchant tokens they produced on commission. The white metal composition positioned these tokens as everyday souvenirs rather than premium collectibles, ensuring broad distribution across the Centennial's massive visitor base. Beyond Centennial tokens, Lingg manufactured commercial checks and trade tokens. Centennial merchant tokens function as miniature time capsules, recording the names, products, and advertising claims of Philadelphia businesses that left few other traces in the historical record.

Rarity Notes

Cataloged as Pa-Ph 258F, this white metal Lingg self-promotional token is moderately available. The Lingg advertising series has a dedicated following among Centennial token specialists.
