Description

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 229) in white metal results from the deliberate combination of the Centennial commemorative die with Liberty Bell design, the central symbol of the Exposition with the die 262F. These mule combinations were produced by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, who controlled the Centennial token dies and created these cross-die pairings as collector novelties. Mule combinations were produced in limited quantities, making them sought after by advanced Centennial token collectors. As the most economical composition, white metal tokens were produced in the largest numbers and distributed most broadly, making them the most accessible Centennial souvenirs. The Centennial transformed Philadelphia's retail landscape in 1876, bringing foot traffic and revenue to merchants who had never experienced anything approaching the volume of business the Exposition generated.

Rarity Notes

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 229) in white metal is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
