Description

Struck in white metal, this die mule (Pa-Ph 227) pairs the die 227 with the Centennial commemorative die featuring George Washington portrait bust. Lingg & Bro., the Centennial's principal token manufacturer, created these mule combinations by intentionally pairing dies from different token series. Mule tokens are generally scarcer than the standard merchant tokens from which their dies originated. Merchants on tighter budgets gravitated to white metal for its combination of acceptable appearance and significantly lower per-unit cost compared to copper or brass alternatives. The Centennial Exposition of 1876 brought the World's Fair tradition to American shores for the first time, transforming Philadelphia into an international showcase for the centennial of independence. Philadelphia merchants capitalized on the Centennial crowds by commissioning advertising tokens, recognizing that the influx of out-of-town visitors represented a once-in-a-generation marketing opportunity.

Rarity Notes

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 227) in white metal is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
