Description

Struck in white metal, this die mule (Pa-Ph 227) pairs the die 227 with the Centennial commemorative die with Liberty Bell design, the central symbol of the Exposition. Lingg & Bro., the Centennial's principal token manufacturer, created these mule combinations by intentionally pairing dies from different token series. Mule tokens are generally scarcer than the standard merchant tokens from which their dies originated. Among the available metal options, white metal provided the best value for merchants seeking maximum distribution, as its low cost enabled larger production runs. The Fairmount Park grounds encompassed 285 acres of exhibition space where visitors could encounter the latest in industrial technology, fine arts, and manufactured goods from dozens of nations. The Lingg firm's comprehensive service included die cutting, metal selection, and striking, allowing merchants to order complete runs of customized tokens in their preferred compositions.

Rarity Notes

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 227) in white metal is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
