Description

Lingg & Bro. produced this white metal self-promotional token (Pa-Ph 224) to showcase their token manufacturing capabilities at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Operating from their Philadelphia shop at 36 North 8th Street, the firm produced the largest body of Centennial merchant advertising tokens, cutting dies for nearly every participating merchant. This piece is one of their own advertising series (Pa-Ph 220-245), distinct from the merchant tokens they produced on commission. As the most economical composition, white metal tokens were produced in the largest numbers and distributed most broadly, making them the most accessible Centennial souvenirs. Beyond Centennial tokens, Lingg manufactured commercial checks and trade tokens. The standard reference for Centennial tokens uses the Rulau catalog, where tokens from different cities receive distinct prefixes (Pa-Ph, NY-NY, etc.) and each die/metal combination gets its own entry.

Rarity Notes

Pa-Ph 224 in white metal belongs to the Lingg & Bro. self-advertising series. Availability varies by metal, with base metals being more common than gilt or silvered examples.
