Description

This white metal Centennial token (Pa Ph-123) was issued by Harbach's, a confectionery and stereopticon dealer of Philadelphia, at 807-809 Filbert Street. Theodore J. Harbach's confectionery, famous for 'Harbach's Original Walnut Candy,' also dealt in magic lanterns and stereopticons. Shortened form was the most commonly used name among customers. White metal pieces sat at the base of the Centennial souvenir pyramid, above only paper ephemera in affordability and below copper, brass, and the rare silver strikings in collector value. Manufactured by the Lingg firm, the dominant producer of merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial season. These tokens serve as a commercial directory of 1876 Philadelphia, preserving in metal the names, trades, and locations of businesses that have long since disappeared from the city's streets.

Rarity Notes

Pa Ph-123 in white metal is encountered with moderate frequency in the Centennial token market. Condition census runs from well-worn to occasional choice examples.
