Description

Struck in white metal for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (NY-NY 862) was commissioned by Traphagen, Hunter & Co., importer and wholesale dealer in toys, fancy goods, and fireworks of New York City, at 45 Park Place. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. New York location meant tokens traveled beyond Philadelphia as portable advertisements. Multiple die varieties indicate the firm ordered tokens in batches over the exposition run. White metal, the composition in which the greatest number of Centennial tokens were produced and survive today. The minimal cost per white metal token enabled a distribution model closer to modern business cards than to commemorative medals. The Lingg firm's North 8th Street workshop handled orders from dozens of Philadelphia merchants, cutting individual obverse dies while reusing standard reverse designs.
