Description
Traphagen, Hunter & Co. issued this white metal souvenir token (NY-NY 860) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Brass striking was intended for higher-end distribution for premium customers. Nine-variety series suggests substantial marketing investment in the Centennial Exposition. This white metal piece reflects the standard production choice for Centennial merchant tokens, where the affordable tin-lead alloy enabled wide distribution to Exposition visitors. The Lingg family firm supplied custom dies to Philadelphia merchants seeking affordable, portable advertising during the Centennial year. Lingg & Bro. offered merchants a complete token service — from die design through striking — and could produce orders in any of several metal compositions to suit different advertising budgets.
