Description

This white metal Centennial token (Ny-Ny 856B) was issued by Traphagen Hunter & Co., an importer and wholesale dealer in toys, fancy goods, and fireworks of New York City, at 45 Park Place. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Traphagen name adds Dutch heritage dimension. As the most economical composition, white metal tokens were produced in the largest numbers and distributed most broadly, making them the most accessible Centennial souvenirs. Produced by Lingg & Bro., whose Philadelphia workshop turned out Centennial merchant tokens at an industrious pace throughout 1876. Under the Rulau numbering system, Centennial tokens are organized by state and city prefix, allowing collectors to systematically catalog the hundreds of known merchant issues and their metal variants.
