Description
Traphagen, Hunter & Co. issued this white metal souvenir token (NY-NY 855) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Brass striking was intended for higher-end distribution for premium customers. Nine-variety series suggests substantial marketing investment in the Centennial Exposition. The white metal composition positioned these tokens as everyday souvenirs rather than premium collectibles, ensuring broad distribution across the Centennial's massive visitor base. Struck from dies by the Lingg firm, whose central Philadelphia location gave them direct access to the merchants seeking Centennial advertising pieces.
