Description
This white metal Centennial token (NY-NY 854) was issued by Traphagen, Hunter & Co., an importer and wholesale dealer in toys, fancy goods, and fireworks of New York City, at 45 Park Place. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Nine-variety series suggests substantial marketing investment in the Centennial Exposition. New York location meant tokens traveled beyond Philadelphia as portable advertisements. This white metal piece reflects the standard production choice for Centennial merchant tokens, where the affordable tin-lead alloy enabled wide distribution to Exposition visitors. Lingg & Bro. dominated Centennial token production from their central Philadelphia location, producing merchant advertising dies at an output unmatched by any competitor.
