Description

This white metal Centennial token (NY-NY 850) was issued by Traphagen, Hunter & Co., an importer and wholesale dealer in toys, fancy goods, and fireworks of New York City, at 45 Park Place. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Nine-variety series suggests substantial marketing investment in the Centennial Exposition. New York location meant tokens traveled beyond Philadelphia as portable advertisements. The white metal composition made this the most economical version of this merchant's Centennial token. White metal tokens survive in the largest numbers because they were produced and distributed in enormous quantities. Lingg & Bro. handled the bulk of merchant token production for the 1876 Centennial from their Philadelphia establishment.
