Description

Issued by J.W. Scott & Co. during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this white metal token (NY-NY 830) advertises a stamp and coin dealer operating from New York City. J. Walter Scott and Company, prominent NYC stamp and coin dealers who published the Scott Stamp Catalogue. Scott stamp catalogue became the most widely used philatelic reference. The white metal composition made this the most economical version of this merchant's Centennial token. White metal tokens survive in the largest numbers because they were produced and distributed in enormous quantities. Lingg & Bro. operated the largest Centennial token production facility in Philadelphia, serving merchants across the city. The 285-acre Exposition in Fairmount Park showcased innovations from 37 nations, including Bell's telephone, the Corliss steam engine, and Remington's typewriter — technologies that would reshape American life.
