Coin Details
Description
W. Pimmel issued this white metal souvenir token (NY-NY 790) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A Philadelphia merchant with three Centennial token varieties. White metal variants most commonly encountered. White metal production costs were a fraction of those for copper or brass, allowing merchants to spread their advertising budgets across greater quantities of tokens. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the firm that produced more Centennial merchant advertising tokens than all other manufacturers combined. The Fairmount Park grounds encompassed 285 acres of exhibition space where visitors could encounter the latest in industrial technology, fine arts, and manufactured goods from dozens of nations. Lingg & Bro. offered merchants a complete token service — from die design through striking — and could produce orders in any of several metal compositions to suit different advertising budgets.
