Description

Huyler's issued this white metal souvenir token (Ny-Ny 765B) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. Huyler's was a NYC confectionery that would grow into a nationally recognized candy company by the 1890s. The Centennial tokens represent early advertising for a pre-WWI confectionery success story. Centennial tokens represent early advertising for a pre-WWI confectionery success. Struck in white metal, the tin-lead alloy most commonly used for Centennial tokens because its low cost allowed merchants to order large production runs for broad distribution. Philadelphia die sinkers Lingg & Bro. produced the vast majority of merchant advertising tokens for the 1876 Centennial, serving clients from diverse commercial trades. The standard reference for Centennial tokens uses the Rulau catalog, where tokens from different cities receive distinct prefixes (Pa-Ph, NY-NY, etc.) and each die/metal combination gets its own entry.
