Description
Issued by Huyler's during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this white metal token (NY-NY 760) advertises a confectioner and chocolate maker operating from New York City. Huyler's was a NYC confectionery that would grow into a nationally recognized candy company by the 1890s. The Centennial tokens represent early advertising for a pre-WWI confectionery success story. Would expand into nationally recognized candy brand by the 1890s. The tin-lead white metal composition was selected for its economy of production, enabling merchants to afford the large quantities necessary for effective distribution at the crowded Exposition. Lingg & Bro. dominated Centennial token production from their central Philadelphia location, producing merchant advertising dies at an output unmatched by any competitor. Centennial merchant tokens function as miniature time capsules, recording the names, products, and advertising claims of Philadelphia businesses that left few other traces in the historical record.
