Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Struck in white metal for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (NY-NY 721) was commissioned by Frederick's Pharmacy, pharmacy and apothecary of Philadelphia. Frederick's Pharmacy issued the most extensive single-merchant Centennial token series, with seven die and metal combinations. Philadelphia pharmacies served dual roles as dispensaries and general stores. Multiple production batches suggest earlier varieties proved effective. White metal formed the foundation of the Centennial token market, with copper, brass, and bronze pieces commanding progressively higher values both at issuance and in the modern collector market. Created by Lingg & Bro., the firm that emerged as the indispensable manufacturer for Philadelphia merchants wanting token-based advertising during the Centennial. Between its May opening and November closing, the Centennial attracted nearly ten million visitors ā more than the entire population of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia combined.
