Coin Details
Description
Dean Cakes issued this white metal souvenir token (NY-NY 712) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. Dean's Cakes was a popular NYC confectionery that issued six Centennial token varieties. New York confectioners competed fiercely for ten million potential customers. Tokens carry New York catalog numbers (NY-NY 709-711). White metal's low material cost made it the practical choice for merchants wanting to distribute tokens broadly among the Centennial's enormous visitor base. Philadelphia die sinkers Lingg & Bro. produced the vast majority of merchant advertising tokens for the 1876 Centennial, serving clients from diverse commercial trades. The Exposition's 285 acres in Fairmount Park contained five main buildings and scores of smaller pavilions where 37 nations displayed their cultural and industrial achievements.
