Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Lingg & Bro. were jewelers in Philadelphia whose copper token is cataloged as Miller Pa-317 (not Miller-296 as sometimes cited). The token was issued in 1876, the year of the American Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, which drew nearly ten million visitors and inspired hundreds of commemorative tokens and medals. Lingg & Bro. produced Centennial Exposition storecards, combining advertising for their jewelry business with souvenir appeal for Exposition visitors. The Centennial Exposition showcased American industrial achievement and attracted merchants from across the country who saw commercial opportunity in the massive crowds. The copper planchet gave this token an appearance closely resembling contemporary United States cents, facilitating its acceptance in daily commerce. Copper merchant tokens of this type circulated widely as advertising pieces and emergency small change. Cataloged as Miller 296 in the standard reference for American merchant tokens.
