Description
The 1876 medal GW-833 in silver features I.F. Wood's design with the first reverse die paired with a Washington Monument theme. I.F. Wood was a die sinker active in the Centennial period who produced several Washington medal varieties. The "1st Rev" designation distinguishes this reverse die from alternative versions used with similar obverse dies. The Monument connection places this medal within the subcategory of Washington Monument commemoratives produced for the Centennial year. Although the Washington Monument in the capital would not be completed until 1884, it was prominently featured in Centennial-era medal designs as a symbol of national aspiration. Silver composition indicates limited production for presentation or collector purposes. Wood's medals are documented in the Baker and Musante-Baker catalogs as the work of a recognized Centennial-era die sinker.
Rarity Notes
Silver, first reverse die. I.F. Wood die sinker. Silver strikings are scarce.
