Description

The 1876 silver medal Baker-435 was issued by the 7th Regiment of the New York National Guard, one of the most prestigious militia units in the United States. The 7th Regiment — known as the "Silk Stocking Regiment" for its upper-class membership — played prominent roles in both the Civil War and civic ceremonies throughout the nineteenth century. The silver composition indicates a presentation-grade medal, awarded to officers or distinguished members of the regiment for the Centennial year. Military unit medals bearing Washington's portrait were common during the Centennial period, as militia organizations linked their service traditions to the Continental Army that Washington had commanded. Baker-435 documents this military unit's participation in the 1876 celebrations. The 7th Regiment marched in numerous Centennial parades and ceremonies, and its medals are collected by both military memorabilia specialists and Washingtoniana enthusiasts.
