Description
The 1876 medal GW-861 restrike in silver is a later production from the original dies of the "First in War / Magna Est Veritas" design. The silver composition and restrike status indicate this was produced for collectors after the initial Centennial-era bronze production, using the original dies to create premium examples in precious metal. Silver restrikes of Centennial medals bridge the gap between the original 1876 commemorative production and the subsequent collector market. Die owners β whether private firms or institutions β found they could generate additional revenue by producing silver strikings of popular designs for the numismatic trade. The distinction between original strikings and restrikes is important for collectors, as it affects both the historical significance and market value of the piece. Silver restrikes are generally scarcer than original bronze issues but carry less historical cachet as primary documents of the Centennial celebration.
Rarity Notes
